Utility

CEF Names 2012

This is a PC only application to assist in searching through the Soldiers from the First World War index on the Libraries and Archives Canada site. Note that this application is a very large download due to the size of the database. Approximatly 200 MB of free disk space is required to install this. This application will only work on a Windows based PC.

CEF Names 2012 will display other information not available on the LAC site, including If the person died during the war, if there is a digital file available on the LAC site, if the individuals attestation papers are missing, If the person was a POW, if the person had any Courts martials or if they had Awards granted to them (see the notes below for the types of awards currently supported).

Note:

This program has been tested  with Microsoft XP and Windows 7. I see no reason that it will not work under Microsoft Vista (or Windows 8), but don't have access to a test system. Anyone that wants to try it, should feel free to do so, and please let me know the results.

Version: 1.1.0.0 Posted: 019/02/2012 Size: 228,115,968 bytes Downloads: 379

Revision: 1:0 19 February 2012 Initial release.

Release 1.1.0.0 - 9 March 2012 Added remote update of records with digital files, updated Military Medal database.

Release 1.1.1.0 - 17 March 2012 Fixed a couple of bug with the search filters, fixed the Digital Files update.

Release 1.1.2.0 - 23 March 2012 - Fixed some minor, but annoying, bugs. If you are an existing user you may get a notice that the program is unregistered the very first time you launch it. That will go away the next time you launch the program. Unfortunatly my meager programming skills did not allow me to get past this.

Release 1.1.3.0 - 18 July 2012 Fixed a major problem retrieving records with apostrophes, Added 120+ more Courts-Martial Entries (1800 to go!), pointed the CEFSG menu to the new server

Release 1.2.0.0 - 29 July 2012 - This is a major update. Enhancements include:

  • Fixed the sort on regimental numbers on the main form. It now sorts in a more logical fashion.
  • Added the DSO to the awards. The program will now show any men that have been awarded the Victoria Cross, the Distinguished Conduct Medal, The Distinguished Service Order and the Military Medal.
  • Modified the Awards search to allow inclusion/exclusion of any Award type during the search.
  • Added a new set of Statistics (under the Help/Statistics menu). It is now possible to see how many men were awarded the MM (for example) and had a Courts Martial, etc.
  • Made some minor enhancements to the initials fields on the main form to center and capitalize the letter for better visibility and to skip to the second initial field automatically.
  • Numerous other minor bug fixes.

Release 1.3.1.0 - 18 August 2012 - This is a major update. Enhancements include:

  • Added the MC to the awards. The program will now show any men that have been awarded the Victoria Cross, the Military Cross, the Distinguished Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Medal.
  • Added the capability to list multiple award winners (from Help/Statistics)
  • Numerous small navigation fixes
