Pte. John Brown Smellie (Jack) was one of three brothers serving during the first World War. His brothers were Pte. Albert George Smellie and Pte. Robert Charles Smellie. Their father was Parker Smellie of Russell, Manitoba.

John (Jack) Smellie's story was told in a Toronto Star article published 02 February 1917 entitled "Memory Vanished at Sound of Riveting / Jack Smelllie Wounded and Shocked at Ypres, Thrice Loses Identity." See attached transcription.
