He died of a shrapnel wound that fractured his thigh during an attack on Vis-en-Artois. "He was immediately attended to and evacuated to Field Ambulance, via Battalion Aid Post, and from there was removed to No. 7 Casualty Clearing Station where he succumbed to his wounds."

His photograph is included on page 472 of Prairie Trails to Blacktop, Carlyle and District 1882-1982. His families history is on page 501 of the same volume. He is also mentioned in his sister's family history on page 1016.
