He was serving with the 18th Battalion when he was wounded on May 22, 1915 and joined The Royal Canadian Regiment in the field on May 1, 1917 where he served for sixteen months. He was wounded in action on June 9, 1917 and again on October 1, 1918 while serving with the RCR. He was awarded the Military Cross and the Victoria Cross, the latter on September 28, 1918.

Later attained the rank of Brigadier.
