James H. Murray was a citizen of Bankhead, Alberta. He worked at the local power house. Upon the outbreak of the war he resigned his job and went to England to enlist in the signal corps of the Royal Naval division as a dispatch rider. He was wounded twice.

His Distinguished Service Medal was awarded for his gallantry in action at Gallipoli.
