Son of James Levi Hammond and Elizabeth Ann 'Betsy' Hammond (nee Dorey, formerly Carver); older brother of James Angus Hammond (Service No. 415196). His grandfather, also named Thomas Hammond, was a veteran of the Battle of Waterloo which had been fought a century before Thomas Edward enlisted.

26th Battalion attacked the German Trenches from their location along "Gun Pit Road", the attack was a failure with the supporting artillery exploding 500 yards behind the enemy ... Thomas was missing after this attack and his body was never recovered.
