On 16/8/17, on Hill 70 near LOOS, after the capture of the CHALK PIT, this soldier with four others was told off to hold a most advanced post. They were subjected to intense machine gun and artillery fire and came under direct observation of the enemy snipers. This party, by their skill and daring, obtained superiority over three enemy machine guns, causing their withdrawal or abandonment. They inflicted many casualties on the enemy when they were forming up for a counter attack.
