Description: From the Regimental Diary:
On 16/8/17, on Hill 70, this soldier displayed exceptional spirit in the attack on the CHALK PIT, afterward bombing along an enemy communication trench to establish a bombing post. The N.C.O. being wounded, he at once assumed command and established the post under heavy enemy fire. Two of his men were wounded , but he along with the remaining two successfully beat off several enemy counter attacks, on one occasion with the bayonet. His companions showed signs of wavering but remained at their post, led by the splendid example of Pte.. Fidgett.
