Description: From the Regimental Diaries
On 16/8/17, on Hill 70, during and after the attack on the CHALK PIT, this company signaler, when he could not keep up communication with the rear by telephone, visual signaling being impossible, volunteered and carried tow most important messages back to advanced Battalion Headquarters. On the return trips he assisted in carrying back water to the forward area, and cheered up all with whom he came in contact. After his return to the CHALK PIT, and not being needed as a runner, he carried water to the men who were consolidating forward of the CHALK PIT, as they were greatly in need of same.
