Description: During the Battle of Cambrai, on October 1st, 1918, he did valuable work in organizing the position for the defence after the attack had been held up. Under heavy machine gun fire he by his cool courage and devotion to duty set a fine example to those under him. During the attack he personally engaged several of the enemy in hand to hand fighting, being successful in each case. His behaviour throughout the whole operation was of the highest order. (M.M. London Gazette January 24, 1919; Canada Gazette April 12,1919, Page 11 Supp) During the operations at Upton Wood on August 30, 1918, when the attack was being held up by heavy machine gun fire, he personally led a Lewis Gun Section forward and outflanked and captured two machine gun posts, killing the crews and capturing the guns. Enlisted at Hamilton, Ont June 15,1915 as Private in 76th Battalion. left Canada April 19,1916. transferred to 1st Battalion C.E.F., August 1st,1916 proceeding to France.

Promotions: Lance Corporal, Corporal, Lance Sergeant, Sergeant, Sergeant Major, Lieutenant

Engagements: Somme, Courcelette, Vimy Ridge, Arieux, Fresnoy, Amiens, Parvillers, Arras, Upton Wood, Cambrai and pursuit of the enemy

Wounded with Shrapnel in both legs and left arm at Fresnoy, May 3, 1917. Removed to Princess Patricia Hospital inEngland, returning to active service with 1st Battalion, C.E.F. On November 18,1917

Awards: Distinguished Conduct Medal with Bar, Military Medal

Returned to Canada, February 2, 1919. Demobilized at Toronto, Ont, February 21, 1919

His gallantry and prompt initiative materially contributed to a successful result. This was the first of two D.C.M. Medals awarded.
