It was noted on Pte. James D. Ross' attestation that he had a tattoo of a thistle with the word Scotland, anchor, and R.R. on left forearm.
An article published in November 1917 reported that Pte. Ross had been admitted to 6th Field Ambulance Depot with a gunshot wound in the right arm. Ross had been in the hospital on earlier occasions with trench fever and gas poisoning.
His only brother, Private William Allan Ross, died of wounds while a Prisoner of War in Germany.
