On June 8, 1916 while his Regiment was resting in billets behind the front line, near Hesdin, 22 km. west of St. Pol, Trooper Butler picked up his rifle and without warning walked over to Trooper Edward Mickleburgh and fired 5 rounds into killing him instantly.

Tried for Murder on June 24, 1916 and shot by firing squad at 4 a.m. July 2, 1916 at Bussy-les-Daours on the Somme.
