Captain Frank Ernest Willhelm Butt, was born in London, 1871. He was fluent in French and German and gained a commission as Second Lieutenant, West India Regiment, in 1894. He subsequently served a total of 9 years military service with 1 West India Regiment, serving at operations in Sierra Leone, 1898-99; advanced Captain 1.5.1900; specially employed on the Gold Coast, 19.1.1900-26.12.1901
After resigning his commission and leaving the West India Regiment, Frank Butt migrated to Canada where he took up profession as a 'Farmer'. He attested at Toronto for service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 11 January 1917. Frank Butt, did not obtain a commission during the Great War and served overseas as a Sapper with the Canadian Engineers.
