His circumstances of death report indicates he was killed in action: "During an attack at Monchy, he was acting as platoon sergeant. When east of Monchy, the platoon was held up by an enemy machine gun post, and the platoon commander whilst proceeding to destroy the post was badly wounded and left lying in the open. Lance/Coporal Flanagan and another comrade went out to rescue the platoon commander and whilst carrying him back to our lines Lance/Corporal Flanagan was hit in the neck by an enemy bullet and instantly killed."
