Son of William Rennie and Sarah Rennie (nee Gendinning); husband of Marion A Rennie (nee Ross) married 1891

He was the original commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion CEF, having previously been the C.O. of the Queen's Own Rifles before the war. Promoted to Brigadier November 11, 1915 and given command of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division. Promoted to Major General on September 16, 1921.
