Major Roderick Ogle Bell-Irving, DSO, MC (1891-1918) was born in Vancouver was one of ten children of Henry Ogle Bell-Irving. Roderick was an original officer of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada and went overseas with the 16th Battalion where he served at the front in France until his death in action late in the war. Many of his nine brothers and sisters served in various capacities during the Great War.
Seven siblings served in various branches of British and Canadian militaries - Henry Beattie Bell-Irving; Richard Bell-Irving; Isabel Bell-Irving; Malcolm McBean Bell-Irving; Allan Duncan Bell-Irving; Aeneas McBean Bell-Irving.
