Konrad ("Konnie") Johannesson was born in Glenboro Manitoba, 10 August 1896
In April 1916 he joined the 223rd (Scandinavian-Canadian ) Battalion of the XI Reserve Division of the Canadian Army.
16 Sept.: after being promoted to rank of Sergeant the Battalion was sent overseas to Shorncliffe England in April 1917.


17 May 1917: requested transfer from the Canadian Army to the Royal Flying Corps.
10 September 1917: transferred to Royal Flying Corps at St. Leonards-On-Sea as a Cadet.
December 1917: transferred to R.F.C. Base at Ismailia Egypt for elementary flying training.
21 January 1918: first solo flight in a Maurice Farman Shorthorn, after 2 hours 20 minutes of dual instruction.
21 March 1918: graduated as a fully qualified R.F.C pilot with a total time of 20 hours 7 minutes.
24 May 1918: Promoted to Lieutenant and appointed as Flying Instructor at the R.A.F. base at Heliopolis & El Khanka Egypt.
24 May 1919: Konnie returned to Canada.

Discharged due to demobilization at Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 20, 1919. Served in WW2 as a civilian flying instructor.

Olympic Gold Medallist

Konnie played on the Winnipeg Falcons Hockey Team, Canada's first Olympic Hockey Champions, in Antwerp, April 1920.
His Falcons jersey and gold medal are now on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Konnie died in Winnipeg Manitoba 28 October 1968.

From July 29 to September 09, 1916 he attended the NCO Qualification course at Camp Hughes, Manitoba. Promoted to Sergeant on November 01. Played for the 223rd Battalion Hockey team in the Winnipeg Patriotic League during the 1916-17 season. From February 26 to April 06, 1917 he attended the Officer Candidates School at Winnipeg, but was not commissioned. He sailed with the 223rd Bn from Halifax to Liverpool aboard the SS Justicia between May 03/14, 1917.

Sergeant Army Canadian Infantry 11th Reserve Battalion Posted to Lower Dibgate Camp on arrival in England. Was confined to Quarantine Camp from May 15 to June 19, 1917 due to an outbreak of Mumps onboard the Justicia while enroute to England. Reverted to Private on May 28. Applied for transfer to the RFC on June 11. His application was approved on July 25. On September 08, 1917 he was posted to the Manitoba Regimental Depot for administrative purposes on being attached to the RFC for flight training. He was discharged from the CEF on January 25, 1918 at 2nd CDD, London on being commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps. Lieutenant Air Force Royal Air Force 38th Wing Was posted to 1st Cadet Wing, St Leonards on Sea, Hastings for initial flight training. On October 14 he was posted to Egypt for advanced flying training, arriving at B Depot, Alexandria, Egypt aboard the SS Aragon on November 03. From November 17, 1917 to January 06, 1918 he was attached to the No 3 School of Military Aeronautics at Heliopolis for flying instruction. On January 06, 1918, he was posted to the 21st Training Squadron at Ismailia. He completed his first solo flight as a pilot on January 21. On January 26 he was promoted to Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps and discharged from the CEF. The same day he was posted to the 58th Flight Training School at Suez for advanced training. On March 25 he graduated as a pilot and was posted to the 38th Training Wing as an instructor. Two months later he was appointed as a flying instructor to the Advanced Flying School at El Khanka. On January 18, 1919 he was transferred to the Discharge Depot pending return to England. He departed for England from Port Said, Egypt on February 10, 1919. By April he was at Ross Barracks, Shorncliffe. He was sent on indefinite leave while awaiting transport to Canada. He returned to Canada aboard the SS Canada in May 1919. ]
