ALBERTA WELCOMES BACK ONE OF FIRST - Major Kenfeld Wants to Keep in Touch With the Boys - In Major Leon Charles E. Kenfeld, Alberta welcomes back one of the first men to leave the province upon the declaration of war in 1914. When the outbreak occurred between France and Germany, in August, 1914, the major, whose home was at Trochu, being a French reservist, left immediately for his native country, and saw active service as early as September of the same year.
He rejoined his old regiment the Eighth Chasseurs, but was later transferred to the 315th Infantry, and still later to the 4th Infantry of the line. The major has miraculously come through his continuous service without disability, and has been awarded the War Cross and has been made a Knight of The Legion of Honour.
When he joined up with the G.W.V.A., which he did immediately upon arrival in Calgary. He said: "I want to remain with the boys and keep in touch with them, for I feel I am still a soldier. (The Calgary Daily Herald - Oct 14, 1919)
