Information relating to the death of Private Henfrey, as the 2nd Battalion is transported from St. Naizaire to Hazelbrouck after entering the theatre of war in France:
"It was during this slow and fatiguing train-ride that the Battalion sustained their first casualty in France. Pte. George Henfrey, reckless of the dangers involved in riding on the roof of railway coaches in Europe, where overhead bridges allow little clearance, climbed onto the roof of the box-car in which he was travelling. Before he could flatten himself to pass under an overhead bridge, tragedy overtook him. He crashed into it and was fatally injured, he died on the 16th of February [1915]." -cited from Murray Col.
