Uploader's Research notes:

Pte. Cardew was killed during the Battalion's first time in the front line trenches being overseen by British veteran troops, near Armentieres.

"It was ironical that the first battle casualty of the second Battalion in France should be the Commanding Officer's batman. Private R.T. Cardew was killed on the 20th of February, his trench shelter having been blown in on him by an enemy shell/ The term 'ironical' is used because of the misconception prevalent throughout the Battalion was that a batman's job was usually 'cushy'. That, indeed, was far from the case."
