FIRST HONOR, THEN DEATH
Gunner E. D. Berry, Killed, Was Recommended for Military Medal.
To have been told that he had just been recommended for the Military Medal, and then to leave immediately for the outpost where he was to meet his death was the fate that befell Gunner E. D. Berry, who formerly lived at 61 Albany avenue. Gunner Berry was recommended for the Military Medal for the coolness and bravery he displayed while repairing wire entanglements and carrying water to the wounded under heavy fire. He was killed on Oct. 8 by a shell that took for its toll five infantry officers as well as an officer in his own battery.
Gunner Berry went overseas with the 30th Battery, but on his arrival in England last January, he was immediately transferred to a howitzer brigade. He has been continually in the trenches since that time.
A chum, writing to his parents, Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Berry, of the Anglican Church, Meaford, Ont., says: "From the very first, shells did not worry him at all. When the other fellows were ducking into holes or behind trees, old Berry would walk calmly along, paying little or no attention to the shells. I don't mean to say he did foolish things, but one fellow walking calmly along is a wonderful help to the others who may feel like running."
