Son of Agnes Moss, of 111, Rideau Terrace, Ottawa, Ontario, and the late Charles Moss.
Based upon currently available data, it appears that the following four service men may have made up the gun crew of the 8th Machine Gun Company that were all killed when a shell exploded in a shell hole where they were sheltering:
141098 Albert Edward Moss - Whilst lying in a shell hole at the strong point South West of Vimy with three others of his gun crew, on the afternoon of April 9th, 1917, an enemy shell exploded amongst them killing them all instantly.141087 James William Chapman - He advanced with the second wave of infantry along with his gun crew, in the initial advance about 5:30 A.M. on April 9th 1917, in the capture of Vimy Ridge. He got safely past the line of craters in “No Man’s Land” but was not seen after. His body was found four days later in a shell hole and his injuries were such as to indicate that he had been hit by a shell and instantly killed.400556 George McCulloch - He was instantly killed about 1 p.m. on April 9th, 1917, by an enemy 5.9 shell that exploded in a shell hole in which he was sheltering, and taking part in operations as No. 1 of a machine gun crew, during the attack on Vimy Ridge.174902 John Thomas Parcillis - Killed in Action.
