With regard to Major Herbert Lionel Oldfield......I am presently researching the Old Boys of a school in Cheshire who died in WW1, and where I taught for 25 years between 1966 & 1991. The above named Major Oldfield was an Old Boy of the school...Mostyn House on the Wirral in Cheshire and I have just finished my research into his military career. Every source I have viewed in my research has got his date of death wrong and not known how he died. In short his 8th Bn had left the shelter of the Ronville Caves at Arras on 6th of April 1918 and marched 9km to relieve contingents of Brit infantry Regts in the Fampoux area. While settling in on the 7th Major Oldfield inspected the front line and was hit by the blast of a whizz-bang. He died same day in a casualty clearing Stn. (Michael Barton)
