Prior to enlistment he took officer training with the 90th Regiment Officer Training programme. Appointed to the 223rd Battalion as a Lieutenant on March 23. Attended Officer Training School from April 16 to May 07. Promoted to Captain on May 15. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Commanding Officer of the battalion on March 18, 1917. The battalion did not recruit to full strength, and he was involuntarily reverted to Major on April 01. He apparently challenged this reversion and tendered his resignation from the service three weeks later. His challenge was upheld and his rank reinstated, although the battalion sailing list showed his rank as Major.

He sailed with the 223rd Battalion aboard SS Justicia from Liverpool to Halifax, May 03-14, 1917. Posted to Shorncliffe Camp on arrival in England.
