Played for the battalion hockey team during the 1916-17 season.

Promoted to Corporal May 16, 1916, and to Sergeant on June 27. He was promoted to Company Sergeant Major on November 07.

The 223rd Battalion sailed aboard the SS Justicia from Halifax to Liverpool, July 03-14, 1917. Posted to Shorncliffe on arrival.

Lance Corporal Army Canadian Infantry 11th Reserve Battalion Reverted to Lance Corporal on being taken on strength with 11th Reserve Battalion. Private Army Canadian Infantry 27th Battalion Reverted to Private and proceeded to France on being posted to 27th Battalion. Attached to the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp from November 22. Joined the 27th Battalion in the field on December 02 in the front line trenches in the Chaudiere Sector. Sergeant Army Canadian Machine Gun Corps 2nd Machine Gun Company

August 11, promoted to Corporal. Promoted to Sergeant on October 01. Granted leave to England between November 06 to December 03.

The 2nd Battalion CMGC proceeded to England on April 12 and was posted to Witley Camp. The battalion returned to Canada aboard SS Minnekahda from Tilbury to Halifax, May 14-23, 1919.
