RESEARCH INFORMATION

Uploader's Notes:

Klaus Anton Winberg was born on 26 April 1883 in Tidavad, Vastra Gotaland, Sweden. His parents were Pat Winberg and Johanna Pettersdotter.

He became a merchant marine and served in WW1 with the number 436041 and the rank of Able Bodied Seaman. He was awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal with ribbon and the British Medal with ribbon.

In the first quarter of 1916 Klaus married Catherine Barkley in Toxteth, Lancashire, England. They had four sons: Carl (b. 20 Oct 1916), Klaus Edward (b. 15 June 1919), Sigurd Alfred (b. 7 April 1923) and Thomas (b. 12 Sep 1926). Catherine died in 1927 and the children were put in an orphanage. About this time, Klaus immigrated to Canada.

He married widow Bertha Jarratt (nee Grant) on 29 May 1928 in Toronto, Ontario. She had arrived in Canada from England in October of 1927 with her daughter Alice and taken up residence with her eldest daughter, Charlotte who was married to Charles Edward Bradley. It is not known what happened to Klaus' second marriage.

Klaus relocated to Kenora, Ontario about 1935 and he worked as a commercial fisherman and a guide. The 1940 Voter's list shows him living on his own in Kenora. In 1956 he attempted to make contact with his sons Carl and Edward, indicating his last contact with them was 1931. He was successful in locating them and sent presents to his grandchildren.

Klaus Anton Winberg died in Kenora on 12 September 1962 and is buried in Lake of the Woods Cemetery.
