Adjutant of the 48th Highlanders 15th Highlanders. Attended the Royal Military College 1904-1907. Member of the 48th Highlanders for 7 years.

According to the Mount Pleasant Cemetery: An Illustrated Guide: M. Filey (pg. 76), Captain Darling was the first Canadian soldier in history to die on foreign soil and subsequently returned to Canada for burial.
