Son of James Naismith Greenshields and Elizabeth Glass Greenshields, of Montreal, Quebec.

His father, born in Danville, Quebec, was a lawyer for Louis Riel's trial in 1885. Later he was involved with Shawinigan Water and Power and Wabasso Cottons. Two of his sons started Greenshields & Company which eventually became Richardson Greenshields.

Captain Greenshields was killed outright after being hit by a piece of shrapnel on the head, link to 13th Battalion War Diary.
