On the night of November 5th, Stone was working with a small crew laying bathmats on Abraham Heights, about 2 km southwest of the village of Passchendaele, when the work party was hit by an artillery barrage. Three men suffered shrapnel wounds, but no trace could be found of Private Stone. His remains were discovered on November 8th and he received a proper burial at the Oxford Road Military Cemetery.
