26 Jul 1916 issue of The World notes that he had been wounded.
Bde War Diary notes that on 24 July that an enemy shell hit outside the HQ killing one man and three horses, wounding 7 men and two horses....two of the wounded men were gunners of 12 Bde Arty...it is very probable that John was one of the two wounded and later died of those wounds
