Description: Great gallantry and devotion to duty June 2nd, 1916. Pte. Heaps alone remained unwounded of the crew of one of the guns C.3.X Btty. He served the gun alone until all the available ammunition was exhausted. Then, when the enemy were again upon him, he seized a rifle and joined with the infantry in repelling the attack. He remained with the Infantry for a further 24 hours acting as a stretcher bearer.
