Captain Townend, born at Halifax, Nova Scotia, son of the late Rev. Alfred John Townend, Chaplain of the Forces, and of Mrs. Margaret Wiseman Townend, of Sunnyside, Camberley, and grandson of the late Mr. W.J. Stairs, of Nova Scotia.

Graduated from the Royal Miltary Acadamy and promoted to Second Lieutenant 21 Jan. 1904
Promoted to Lieutenant, Royal Corps of Engineers, vice L. C. A. de B. Doucet. Dated 24th September, 1906.

Appears to have played test cricket in India in 1908/09.
