Distinguished Conduct Medal
Description: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack near Cagnicourt on September 1st-2nd 1918. Throughout two days' fighting, and after his officer had become a casualty, he displayed great skill and qualities of leadership in the handling of the platoon. In the mopping up he captured over a hundred of the enemy, personally killed three, and also captured six machine guns. Bombing the enemy with their own grenades, he established an important block in the trench and held same despite repeated strong efforts to dislodge him. Throughout his gallantry, initiative and indomitable pluck were superb.
