Major Shaw rode a motor cycle into the forward area in the early afternoon of November 3rd, 1918, but was reported missing when he had not returned by 2300 hours. His body was found in Onnaing the next day. It appeared that he had ridden into German lines and was mortally wounded by both rifle and shell fire, and the Germans had carried him to Onnaing, where he died of his wounds.
