The 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles War Diary includes an entry dated March 27th, 1917, regarding a direct hit on a dug-out occupied by 14 men of "B" Company (5th CMR) and 16 men from other units. The 5th CMR lost 8 men in this tragic incident.
The War Diary entry for March 28th, 1917 noted that the funeral was held at 9:00 am at Ecoivres Cemetery. Direct hit was somewhere in vicinity of Neuville St. Vaast. Captain Rev. Duncan and R.C. Chaplain Father Lowry officiated with all available officers, N.C.O.s, and men attending.
