Uploader's Notes: Son of Richard S. and Elizabeth Perry, of 40, Howland Avenue, Toronto, Canada. In March 1915, he enlisted in the Eaton Machine Gun Battery, and went overseas as Bombardier in June. He then obtained his commission in the R. Field Artillery in November, and being appointed to the 120th Battery, 27th Brigade, 5th Division, went to France in March 1916. He served through the battle of the Somme, and distinguished himself on August 18th at Edge Trench in Delville Wood, when took charge of some Infantry whose officers had all become casualties, and assisted them to hold the position which they won. He was Forward Observation Officer at Swtich Trench on September 15th, and when a party of enemy snipers in a redoubt was holding up Infantry, he borrowed rifles and with three others worked round to a point that commanded the redoubt, preventing the enemy from shooting and enabling the Infantry to advance. For these actions he was awarded the Military Cross. He fell in the following spring, at Vimy Ridge, when a shell struck his dug-out killing him and three other officers. Buried at Vimy Cemetery. Honour Roll – University of Toronto / Roll of Service 1914-1918, 1921.
