As stated in the Peterborough Examiner of November 27, "William appeared before the Police Court this morning and was found guilty of failing to comply with the Military Service Act and sentence was suspended on the consideration that he would surrender himself to the military authorities." The Attestation Paper was signed on that same date (Nov 27).

As stated in the Havelock Standard of September 19, 1918, "Mr. Thomas McMullen received a cablegram last week from the military authorities overseas, conveying the sad intelligence that his son, Pte. William McMullen, had died on the 9th inst. from pneumonia. Pte McMullen was taken ill some weeks ago from an attack of pleurisy and was supposed to be getting along nicely. Evidently pneumonia had set in unexpectedly with fatal results."
