His Circumstances of Death card indicates:

"Previously reported Wounded and Missing, now for official purposes presumed to have died:

A brother officer states that Lieutenant Brotherhood was in a trench about two feet deep, when it was violently being shelled, by the enemy. It was understood he had been badly wounded, and left behind when the troops retired. The enemy were seen bayoneting wounded and it is generally thought that this officer shared that fate."
