Willard was the son of Hiram and Alice(Clouston) Appleby. Born at Lower Derby, New Brunswick.
According to the unit war diary only one man was killed that day, and that was from sniper fire. Willard may have been the fellow noted in the war diary. The losses for 1CMR, during the capture of Vimy, was 365 men killed, wounded or missing.
Willard's older half-brother, William Herbert Appleby (DOB June 1, 1878), died while serving in the Boer War. William was the son of Hiram & Janet (Vye) Appleby of Derby, N.B. His mother died in Jan 2, 1881 at age 22. He was raised by his grandparents, Joseph & Ellen (Edgar) Vye. Willard had another brother who served in the Great War:Harold Frederick Appleby b.11/08/1899 died 7/10/1968. He survived the war. Married Glenna Duncan 1/27/1926.Uploader's Research notes:
