Arthur Barnard could have been born 15 April 1892 with mother Caroline M Barnard ( later she married George Bray) but by 1901 a 7 year old Arthur Barnard was a Boarder in the Household of Caroline and George Simmons in Hailsham St Mary Hellingly Sussex England. In 1906 a 10 year old Arthur Barnard becomes a Barnardo Home Child and leaves Liverpool on 8 March 1906 on Board the Ship Dominion that arrives in Portland Maine on 21 March 1906 with final Destination Barnardo Homes Toronto Ontario. In 1911 Arthur Barnard is a Domestic in the household of Nellie and John Brown in Clarke Durham Ontario. Arthur lived and worked with a Farmer in Orono for a few years and was employed by a Rubber Factory in Bowmanville when he enlisted in the Port Hope Headquartered 136th Canadian Infantry(Durham) Battalion on 11 Oct 1915.The family claimed that, at the time of going overseas, was the bugler of that battalion. (Book of Remembrance).On 25 September 1916 the 136th Battalion sailed for England where it was broken up and Private Arthur Barnard was transferred to the Belleville Headquartered 39th Canadian Infantry Battalion on 6 October 1916. On 15 November 1916 after taking a Machine Gun Course Pte Arthur Barnard was transferred to the St John/ Saint Jean Headquartered 87th Canadian Infantry Battalion Battalion.Previously reported Missing, now Killed in Action. This soldier was hit in the stomach and neck by an enemy explosive bullet and instantly killed on 9 April 1917. Former Barnardo Home Child Private Arthur Barnard was killed during an Attack on Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917.
