Moved to Canada 1st March 1914 on the ship the Empress Ireland.

His medical form stated he was 5 ft 8 ins, with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and light hair.

·He travelled to England, from Halifax (Canada) with his fellow troops on the HMT Olympic (sister ship to the Titanic) on approx. 31st May 1916, arriving 8th June 1916.

He was admitted to hospital whilst in Shorncliffe on 24th July 1916 with German measles. He was discharged from hospital on 11th August 1916.


·He was then transferred to the 31st Battalion in Westenhanger. He was then moved to the 31st Batalion out in the field, Havre. It is believed that he was in the field and fought in the Battle of the Somme between Sept 1916 and Dec 1916.

·12th January 1917 he was admitted to (Hospital 5 of the) Canadian Field Ambulance, 8th February 1917 into the General hospital and 13th February into hospital in Etaples. All times for Bronchitis and Laryngitis .


· He was sent back to the field on 23rd February 1917 and arrived back to the 31st Battalion on 3rd March 1917.

· He was admitted to the Canadian Field Ambulance once more this time with Mumps on 13th March 1917 and transferred to the 12 Stationary hospital. He was released from hospital on the 29th March 1917 and returned to the field.


· He was killed in action at approx 9.20 am Easter Monday 9th April 1917 in the battle of Vimy Ridge, Arras, France. His Lewis gun crew were advancing through no mans land under heavy shell fire and took a direct hit from a shell. The shell killed him outright and wounded two others and smashing the gun.
