Clayton joined the 80th Overseas Battalion on 7 Oct 1915 in the Belleville Armouries. The 80th was authorized on 10 July 1915 and trained at Barriefield and sailed for England on 20 May 1916 where it was broken up. Pte Belnap passed through the 74th Battalion and ended up in the 78th Battalion on 18 July 1916. The 78th Battalion(Winnipeg Grenadiers) was authorized on 10 July 1915 and landed in France on 13 August 1916 where it was part of the 12th Brigade, 4th Canadian Division in France and Flanders. On 27 September 1918 22 year old Private Belnap of Headquarters Company and two others from the 78th Battalion were in a "jumping Off" trench when an enemy shell exploded and killed all three of these young soldiers. Today in the nearby Bourlon Woods is a Cemetery and a monument commemorating these 3 young 78th Battalion CEF soldiers.
