He went by the name Barclay Brown, but was known as 'Brownie' by his mates

Recommended for the Victoria Cross for valour at the Somme (Regina Trench), unfortunately, this recommendation is not mentioned in his service file, nor in the 3rd Battalion War Diary. The only mention of this was found in a newspaper clipping. In any case, the VC was not awarded to this soldier
