Son of Charles Henry Potts and Mary Potts (nee Laffin) who died of Typhoid Fever on 20 Dec 1905, of Pendleton, Manchester, England.

James was placed in the care of Styal Cottage Homes of the Chorlton Board of Guardians. On 4 April 1907 an 11 year old James Potts leaves Liverpool England on the ship SS Tunisian as a Home Child that arrives in Halifax Nova Scotia on 12 April 1907 in the care of Rev Robert Wallace with final destination Marchmont Belleville Ontario. In 1911 James Potts is a Servant in the home of the Juby family of Sidney Township.The 34th Battery of Canadian Field Artillery was formed in Belleville Ontario on 1 April 1912 and James McConning Potts was a 1912 recruit. On 30 August 1914 James M Potts is on the payroll of the 2nd Battery 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery because he went to Camp Valcartier with his 34th Battery unit.
