Calgary Daily Herald - October 19th, 1916, pg. 1:

LIEUTENANT CHARLES GORDON OF CALGARY HAS BEEN KILLED

He Was Receiving Teller at the Bank of Commerce Before His Enlistment

In comparison with casualty announcements of previous days, the official report issued by the militia department of Ottawa last night is much lighter, but through private sources news of the deaths of several well-known Calgarians have been received. Lieut. Charlie Gordon, former receiving teller of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Calgary, was killed in action during the course of the Canadian drive against the German lines near Courcelette. The news came in a letter from Corp. Allan Roughton to his mother, in this city: William Connally, of Macleod, is also stated to have surrendered his life, while George S. Hunt, Sergt. T. J. Ebden and Private William Thompson were mentioned among the killed in Wednesday's issue of The Herald.

LIEUT. CHARLIE GORDON, who left Calgary as a Corporal in the 31st battalion, was killed in action while participating in the big Allied drive in the vicinity of Courcelette. The grim news reached Calgary this morning in a letter from Corp. Allan Roughton to his mother in this city, and in the same message he stated that Lieut. Gordon had been appointed assistant adjutant only a short time before he fell, mortally wounded in the titanic engagement.

Lieut. Gordon was receiving teller in the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Calgary for several years, and during his time here surrounded himself with a wide circle of friends, who will mourn the loss of a true and faithful friend. He lived in the bank rooms over the branch office on First street west. He enlisted in the 31st battalion shortly after the outbreak of hostilities and crossed to the other side in May, 1915. After serving for a time with the Canadian forces on the western front he was elevated to the rank of lieutenant and later appointed assistant adjutant.

The late Lieut. Gordon was a Scotchman by birth, 26 years of age and unmarried.

The letter from Lieut. Roughton was published in the Calgary Herald on October 19th, 1916, pg. 9. This included details of Lieut. Gordon's death.
