Military Medal (Vimy Ridge)
Description: Vimy Ridge

For exceptional good work and bravery in the attack on SWISCHEN STELLUNG on April 9th, 1917. When our advance was temporarily checked by enemy machine gun fire, he at once engaged the enemy crew with his Lewis Gun, and silenced them for intervals, during which, our men could rush forward a short distance. He repeatedly made these rushes possible until our men reached the enemy trench on the left. During this time, most of his crew had become casualties and his gun put out of action, when he immediately got another and continued firing. He assisted in establishing a block in ALBRECHT AVENUE and then supported bombing squad which cleared out 200 yards of enemy trench on the south of our Divisional Boundary, when our right flank was open before the Battalion on the right got up.

At the block established there, he beat off two enemy grenade attacks, remaining in this position roughly three hours. His example and determination under enemy fire had a very assuring effect on the men. He has always done very good work in the line.

Date of award: 1917-04-09
