Son of the late James McLeod; husband of Alice J. McLeod, of Chatham, New Brunswick.

Carter's date of death is 28 September 1916, that is probably the date that the Bn listed him as "missing". It is probable that he was killed by shell sire near Flers-Courcelette or near Thiepval Ridge. The Bn was involved in a large action near Regina Trench and sufferred 40 men killed that day. The Bn history notes that he was wounded on 15 and 17 Sep 1916. It is probable that he died of wounds and his body was hastily buried and never recovered for a collection burial.
