Son of John Robert Miles and Rosa Maud Miles (nee Williams)

May 15, 2014. The following information was provided by relative Joyce Falink of Cannon Falls, Minnesota:

Cecil Norman Miles was my mother's brother. He was one of 11 children born in Santa Cruz, Jamaica to Rosa Williams Miles and John Miles. Rosa's mother, Isabella Hutchison Williams, owned Southampton, a property in the Santa Cruz mountains and John's family owned Wharton, a property near Lacovia, not too far from Santa Cruz. Cecil followed some of his family members who emigrated to Canada where he found work as a trolley car motorman. He enlisted in the 180th Battalion and was Killed in Action in 1917. His battalion was stationed in England before leaving for the front. His name appears on the Vimy Memorial in France.

A relative of this soldier has stated that this soldier was Black and light skinned. Other relatives are saying that he was white.

I have marked the Ethnic origin record as "not specified" until the ethnicity is proven...The Legacy Voices Project. The Legacy Voices Project; Information provided from The Thamis Gale Collection -No 4. Blacks and West Indians in the C.E.F. Not part of No 2 Construction Battalion.
