Details of death
"Previously reported Died (through German sources) now for official purposes presumed to have Died whilst Prisoner of War near Willerval." Whilst in charge of a Mounted Patrol, on April 9th, 1917, and when rounding up some German prisoners in the village of Willerval, an enemy machine gun stationed about 100 yards up the road opened fire and he was hit in the knees and knocked off his horse and again hit in the chest. The Patrol Sergeant dismounted and went over to him and asked him if he could stand. Lieut. Murray said "No," and ordered the Sergeant to leave him and report the results of the reconnaisance (sic). Lieut. Murray was therefore left in enemy hands and a report was later received through German sources that he had succumbed to his wounds. On or since 9-4-17.Previous service: 2 years 4th Hussars. In "C" Squadron at time of enlistment. 2 1/2 years Royal Canadian Dragoons
