The War Diary for the 58th Battalion states "Major G.A. Reid who was in command of the Company on the left, and who, although shot in the stomach when about 75 yards from the enemy trench, continued to cheer on his men, subsequently dying in a shell hole. He was a very capable officer and his death is a great loss to the officers and men of the Battalion."
